KEEP ICE OUT
OF OUR CITIES AND NEIGHBORHOODS

WHY THIS MATTERS RIGHT NOW

The federal government purchased a building in Romulus to use as an ICE detention facility — in secret, without public notice, without environmental review, without community input. The same situation is happening all over the country. The facility in Romulus is not yet operational. We have a narrow window to stop it by making sure every agency, official, and institution that holds infrastructure access — water, sewer, permits — understands: we are watching, and we will hold them accountable. Every share, every call, every conversation counts.

Coalition to Shut the Camps

We oppose these facilities unequivocally.

There is extensive, well-documented evidence that conditions and practices inside detention camps violate both the US Constitution and international law. These include arbitrary detention without due process, unsafe and inadequate living conditions, denial of basic nutrition and healthcare, the incarceration of children, and, in some cases, the use of forced labor.

Immigrants are not abstractions—they are our neighbors, colleagues, friends, and family members.

They are owners and workers who help keep businesses running and contribute to the local economy; friends neighbors, parents to our children's friends, and vibrant members of our communities; and family members with whom we rely upon and share deep and enduring bonds.

The existence of these facilities is a threat to safety of citizens and non citizens alike.

When civil liberties are weakened in one system, it sets a precedent. A weakened rule of law increases the risk that more people’s rights will be violated. Already US citizens are being detained and denied of their rights due to errors, misidentification and government overreach.

We must hold individuals, agencies and organizations that permit and regulate these facilities accountable.

We call for an end to secret and corrupt deals. Instead, we demand a fully transparent public process in which public officials, agency and/or regulated utilities use all regulatory means at their disposal to protect the communities they serve from being subjected to the the wide ranging negative impacts of these facilities. These impacts include decline in property values; the overburdening of local infrastructure and related increase in costs; decline community trust in public safety; along with environmental impacts and loss of local control.
