ABOUT US

The Coalition to Shut the Camps is made of individuals and partner organizations actively engaged in preventing the opening of the proposed detention facility at 7525 Cogeswell St. in Romulus, Michigan, and to closure of detention centers nationwide. We take direct, targeted action to hold city, county, state, and federal authorities accountable for the approval and operation of these facilities, which are marked by documented violations of international law and fundamental constitutional protections, including due process.
"Isn't this a federal issue? What can locals do?"
A lot. The facility needs local water, sewer, and permits to operate. The City, the county, and water authorities all have legal authority over those connections. Local officials who cooperate with this — without proper public process — are enabling it. Local officials who demand transparency can slow or stop it.
"Does that mean you are against enforcing immigration law?"
We're against secret government facilities built without environmental review, community input, or legal compliance. Whatever your view on immigration policy, a government that buys buildings in secret and skips the law doesn't get a pass. This is about accountability and rule of law.
"This is already done. You can't stop it."
It isn't operational. It isn't permitted. The city and state are in federal court. The infrastructure isn't connected. We're not fighting to reverse history — we're fighting to stop something that hasn't happened yet. There is still time.
